If you've ever wanted to ski in the Dolomites section of the Alps in Italy, then Val di Fassa and the Carezza Italian ski resort may answer your craving. The panoramic vistas of the mountains-stretching from Belluno and Trento and from the Adige River by the Val Pusteria (valley) east to west-make this one of the most charming ski areas in all of Italy. The area is so great for skiing because of all the zones you can have access to when skiing. The Val di Fassa skiing area incorporates the Fassa to Carezza ski areas. The lifts and slopes in all of these is part of the Dolomiti Superski Area.

The heritage remains intact; however, the Italian and German influences have been strong for decades and will remain the dominant language and culture for the future. For now, though, visitors can find plenty of history as far back as two hundred years ago. It's not impossible to walk or ski past some of the oldest architecture in northern Italy.

Val di Fassa and Carezza offer some serious skiing. If you combine the Tre Valli's ski and Carezza ski areas, the size goes up to nearly 10 km above Alba and over 30 km above Moena. If you buy the right ski pass, there are over 200 kilometers of skiing in and around Val di Fassa, though this becomes more sizable if you include other accessible ski resorts in the area. If you buy the Dolomoti Superski ticket, you'll have more skiing than can possibly be done in a week or two.

In order to access the 200-plus lifts in the Val di Fassa-Carezza ski zone, you'll have to ride all 60 lifts. When the snow refuses to fall, there are plenty of snow cannons heaving artificial snow on all the interlinked ski runs. The other valleys in the area, such as Arabba, Val Badia and Val Gardena, give easy access to the whole Sella Ronda circuit. In order to complete this ski circuit, you'll have to start from the villages of Canazei or Campitello. Though most of these slopes are less than 2,000 meters, you'll have plenty of fabricated snow making your ski holiday a blast no matter the weather.

The skiing in Val di Fassa and Carezza include all the normal black, blue, red and green runs. In Carezza ski resort alone, you can find minimum of 30 km of pistes. The highest lift drops you off at 2350 meters with the lowest at just 1200 meters. Even so, the max vertical in the Carezza ski zone is 1150 meters. Additionally, there are all sorts of ski tours in the area, not limited to the somewhat famous Four Passes Tour, the Trevalli Tour, The SkiTour Panorama and Great War Tour. It's humanly possible to ski from various villages on a different tour each and every day of a six-day ski pass and never see the same scenery twice.

The ski passes in the Val di Fassa and Carezza Italian ski area are not as imposing as one might think for Alp skiing. The season starts a bit later than others, with pre-season skiing usually ending on December 23rd. A six-day ski pass will cost one adult around €150 (€100 child). The high season commences on December 24th with prices going up about 20-30%. The high season prices begin at about €185 for an adult (€130 child) and end on January 6th. Normal season prices start again afterwards at €160 (€115 child) and end for another round of high season prices on the first of February; this high season ends mid-March with one more session of lower regular season prices. All these prices take into consideration that you will buy a six-day individual ski pass. (A full season ski pass will cost about €440 per adult and €150-€300 per child.)

The entire Val di Fassa ski area includes some great out-of-the-way ski and snowshoeing destinations. If, for example, you like cross-country skiing, it's very easy to get piste's maps upon your arrival to the Carezza ski resort. If you'd like to snowboard, there are plenty of places located throughout the ski region, though you may have to find ones in other nearby ski areas. Some runs have night skiing, using floodlights to light the slopes for 24-hour ski service. Additionally, the nightlife in the area includes all the favorite apres-ski venues, from bars to restaurants, pubs to clubs, health spas to discotheques, the chances of finding something on or off slope that you'll enjoy are guaranteed.

Sestriere, Via Lattea Ski Resort

The Sestriere ski resort was purpose-built so long ago because it is a very snow-sure place.
The altitude reaches well above 2000 meters, so snow is not only likely but also guaranteed. A family actually started the resort and was forward-thinkers in their own right. In fact, they had snow cannons and snow machines in the early 70s and 80s before other resorts even considered spending that kind of money to guarantee visitors snow. Almost forty years ago, Sestriere was making snow when not enough fell to guarantee visitors a good time.
If you're a skier looking for a ski-sure place this holiday season, look no further than Sestriere. The Via Lattea is actually a pass that links several other ski areas. The name itself means Milky Way and once you see the white glistening snow, you'll understand why the name makes perfect sense.
The Milky Way-or Via Lattea-Pass interlinks Sauze d"Oulx to Montgenevre (located just over in France) by way of Sansicario, Claviere and Cesana. The four ski areas (towns) that make up Sestriere are Sestriere Colle, Sestriere Borgata, Champlas du Col and Champlas Janvier. If you hit the slopes late enough in the season, you could have access to over 430 kilometers of skiing under one ski pass right out your back door. This guarantees powder-rich slopes and the Milky Way is always white and dusted with several meters of snow. Sestriere is in the Susa Valley within the world-renowned Piedmont of the Italian Alps, where you can literally see France in the horizon.
All levels of skiers will have no trouble finding snowy slopes.
Right near the resort itself, the hills just undulate oh so carefully, inviting beginners to try a ride or two. The nursery slopes beckon and don't scare away beginners and children skiers alike. Even if it only snows higher up, the nursery slopes are well covered with snow too with all the snow cannons. While little Johnny is practicing on the nursery slopes, you can take a ride down the Kandahar Slalom Giovanni Alberto Agnelli run as long as you're an expert.
If you're into the natural challenges of the mountains, you won't want to miss a run down Sestriere's slopes. In all, there are over 400 kilometers of runs and over 65 lifts with nearly 1000 snow guns. There are 58 km and 31 blue runs here, keeping the place uncrowned and moving. Additionally, the red runs cover 193 kilometers and number in the upper 90s. If you're an expert, you'll have around 70 km of ski runs with 32 official black slopes.
The tallest peak you'll have access to in Sestriere Italian ski resort is 2840 meters, with access to 1840 and 2035 meters. If you like human power rather than gravity, take a trail on the cross-country courses; there's over 8km of these awaiting your skis. In case you're wondering where to stay, here is an idea of what you can find and the altitude that each town is built at. To the east under Mt. Genevris, you'll find Sauze d'Oulx at 1509 meters-Oulx proper is just down the mountain from here. Sestriere ski resort lies at 2035 meters, under Mt. Rognosa and Mt. Sises. Grangesises lies at 1839 meters in the shadow of Roc del Boucher. Clavier, more to the west of the range, lies at 1760 meters and under Mt. Gilmont and Mt. Dormillouse. Just farther west and about 100 meters higher lies the town of Montgenevre, just south of Mt. Chenaillet.
These towns and ski resorts all have doorstep access to the slopes, so if you find a good price in accommodation in one over another, take it and know that you can easily get back and forth from one resort to another in no time.
The apres ski venue isn't too shabby if you'd like a night out alone or with your family. If you're a young partygoer, you'll have no trouble finding a party or two to keep you up into the wee hours of morning. When you're here, try looking for The Cavern, The Irish Igloo, The People Pub, and the Tabata disco. You can get more to eat than pizza here too. Try the El Giget, Du Grande Pere, Pinky or Zio Popy for good service and some good eats. These places have been given good reviews by local and foreign crowds so you won't be let down even if you pay a lot for some of the meals.

It certainly is no big secret that more wine is produced in Italy than any other country in the world. Truth is in Italy's wine regions it's making has been raised to the level of an art form. An art that has been passed down from generation to generation and throughout many decades. Wine making thrives in Italy because it's climate allows for the growing of a large variety of grapes. More so than any other region in the world.

The majority of this production is done in the world famous region of Tuscany. Tuscany can be found right in the center of Italy. The famous fashion capital Milan is far to the north, near the borders of France and Switzerland, while Rome is a little to the south. Tuscany is a jewel set between the Tyrrhenian Sea on the west and the Apennines mountain range on the east. It consists of ten provinces, one of which is Pisa. A city famous for it's Leaning Tower. The capital city is Florence.

The wine history in Tuscany is just as historic as Italy's architecture and art. A history that extends as far back as the beginning of time.

Everybody has heard of the well-known wines such as Chianti from Tuscany, Valpolicella and Soave, but what about the marvelous Rondinella, Malvasia and Sangiovese? These are marvelous wines, and the little known Malvasia is superb. There are more different types of vine grown in Italy than any other country, and Italy can truly be awarded the accolade of wine growing country of the world. The French, Germans and all of the New World Australian and American wine producing areas pale into insignificance when compared to Italy. At least for volume.

This geography provides every type of climate possible for growing grapes, and the cold loving vines and those larger and juicier grapes that prefer more heat are all well catered for. It never gets too dry, and never gets too wet. Were you to personally design a country and climate ideal for growing just about every variety of grapes, you would end up with Italy.

La spezia

It is a well known fact that to know a city inside out, a stroll on foot brings the most satisfaction. Our hurried lifestyle nowadays, can always have an improved quality by giving ourselves time to walk around a place, purely to enjoy the visual pleasures.

This goes for La Spezia too, it should be discovered without haste leaving from the jetty where the ferries are moored, called “Molo Italia”. Go through the exotic Public Gardens which are the pride of the city for their careful upkeep and flourishing flora. Then along Viale Diaz to the crossroad with Via Chiodo with its airy shaded arcades.
Straight across is Via Prione, a lively pedestrian street in the heart of the old town. The Civico Theatre designed by Franco Oliva comes up on your left symbolising the elegant thirties. A little way on where the street narrows, below the length of wall that dates back to the beginning
of the seventeenth century, what was once one of the entrances to La Spezia can be seen. This was in fact the entrance from the Naval Base to the walled city.
